TECH TIPS

#100 Choosing the Right Dust Mop

CONSTRUCTION
LOOPED END:

Looped end construction helps eliminate linting and fraying. With no loose ends, mops last longer, withstand laundering and are far less vulnerable to tangling and deterioration in the laundry. Golden Star's Infinity Twist® yarn takes looped end performance a step further by tightly twisting the looped ends all the way up to the backing through a patented process. This allows dirt to wick up to the backing. This unique yarn construction eliminates crushing and matting down. Performance is greatly enhanced. Great sweeping and polishing capabilities.

CUT END:

This traditional style works well in all but the most demanding situations, especially when sewn rather than tufted. Though more economical in its initial cost, a cut end style dust mop is not designed to be laundered or to withstand rigorous use. It tends to unravel, fray, lint and mat down during use. These problems shorten mop life and decrease performance.

BACKING:

Mildew resistant, synthetic backing is stronger and more abrasion resistant than canvas. It is non-absorbent and is less likely to become discolored or stained. Non-absorbent backings dry faster for energy conservation. Since it will not hold treatment, all dust mop treatment remains in the mop yarn where actual cleaning is taking place. Backing styles include Jumbo Set-O-Swiv, Regular Set-O-Swiv and Quik Change™.

YARN TYPES
COTTON:

Cotton fiber remains the most effective yarn for collecting and retaining dust and particle matter. Studies have shown that nylon and rayon are not as effective as cotton for dust control since they do not have the same capacities for wicking or absorbing treatment.

TREATMENT:

Treated dust mops have been proven twice as effective as untreated tools. Pre-treated mops offer convenience, labor savings and insure a properly treated product every time. New, non-petroleum based dust mop treatments give all the benefits of oil-based treatments without the environmental hazards. For correct on-site treating, use two ounces of treatment for every foot of dust mop. For retreating, use one ounce for every foot of dust mop. Before use, a minimum curing time of eight hours is recommended. When chemical treatment is not appropriate, choose a mop that picks up by static attraction making treatment unnecessary.

#101 Choosing the Right Wet Mop

CONSTRUCTION
LOOPED END:

Looped ends add longer life and better performance to wet mops. Looped ends allow for an open more absorbent twist that does not lint, fray or unravel. Ideal when a facility wants to launder their wet mops.

CUT END:

Popular because of their low initial cost. Functional and affordable, they are ideal for almost any application from general mopping to applying finishes.

HEADBANDS:

Available in 1 1/4" and 5" widths. Extra stitching holds mop strands securely. All headbands on looped end wet mops are color coded by size for quick identification of inventory and department use separation.

TAILBANDS:

Tailbands improve coverage control. They enable the mop to cover a wider path saving time and labor. Tailbands prevent tangling and permit laundering.

STA-FLAT:

This feature gives great maneuverability and performance. Helps mop lay flat on the floor to improve coverage. Detachable screw-on handle.

YARN TYPES
COTTON:

Cotton fibers are popular because of their low initial cost, limited shrinkage and great absorption. Cotton picks up 2 to 3 times its weight. We offer several piles of cotton each designed for particular tasks from everyday mopping to highly abrasive surfaces.

RAYON:

Rayon fibers have fast absorption. They are mildew resistant, lint less and dry fast. Rayon is designed to pick up 6 to 7 times its weight but it has no retention capabilities and, therefore, is an excellent finish mop.

BLENDS:

Blends combine all the advantages of several different fibers to provide the ideal balance of price, performance and appearance. Highly absorbent. Blends pick up and hold 6 to 7 times their weight. They require no break-in.

#102 Caring For Your Mops

Most mops do not wear out through use, but through abuse. A few simple maintenance pointers will extend the life and improve the efficiency of your mops.
WET MOPS:
  1. Break-in new mop heads in warm, mild detergent solution for at least twenty minutes.
  2. Avoid scrubbing with the top portion of mop. This tends to tear strands and shorten mop life.
  3. Avoid strong cleaning solutions (lye, bleach, caustics, etc.) They will break strands far more quickly.
  4. When mopping a rough surface, mop in a direction that minimizes snagging. If possible, reserve one particular mop for these surfaces.
  5. Cut off any loose strands to prevent snagging and splattering.
  6. Thoroughly rinse and wring out mops after each use.
  7. Store mops, strands hanging down, in a warm, dry, well-circulated area.
  8. Discard and replace worn out mop heads. Lost strands decrease mops ability to perform. If a mop is only 75% of its original weight, it will take 1/3 additional time to get the job done.
DUST MOPS:
  1. Collect the dust mops at the end of each shift and shake out, vacuum or brush the mop completely to remove the larger particles from the mop. Re-treat as needed.
  2. Store mop heads in a dry clean area with the head up, not touching the wall or floor.
  3. Soiled mop heads should be laundered. For laundering, place the mop head in a netted bag. Infinity Twist® Dust Mop heads do not require bagging.

4. Drying:

Compared to traditional mops, drying time is significantly reduced with Microfiber products. Drying times will vary depending on your geographical location, equipment, environment and load size. When programming auto dryer settings, monitor temperature for the first 3 - 6 loads, stop temperature when 120°F is reached then begin cool down after set point has ran for 3 - 5 minutes.

AIR DRYING IS RECOMMENDED but if you must dry using gas or steam heat, start by tumbling these mops at 140°F incoming temperature, 100°F exhaust (If available on your equipment, reverse the dryer drum during the drying cycle. It reduces the drying time and will not create heat pockets in the mop / yarns prolonging their service life). Cool to 90°F - 100°F before unloading. MOPS SHOULD NOT BE FULLY DRY; Moisture content should be approximately 20 - 25% unless they are being poly wrapped directly from the dryer.

Microfiber is the perfect item to air dry at the end of your production shifts. If you have large dryers that require cool down of the drum support rollers at the end of the production day place the microfiber items in the drum before you start the dryer and allow them to tumble while doing this cool down even if you only have a small quantity of microfiber items. It is not wasted energy and it will prolong the life of your products.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Over time, the harsh chemicals such as those contained in bleach and the use of fabric softeners will reduced the performance and longevity of the microfiber products.

DO NOT WASH/STORE OR TRANSPORT microfiber mops with terry towels, regular mops or any other product that has cotton or linting capabilities. Separate different colored microfiber mops before their first wash.
